Kash,

"What do u think will be the actual difference in elapsed time between a 1Ghz cheapo system.

And a 1.33Ghz break the bank system."

The difference in price between a 1 GHz and a 1.33 GHz system is very small nowadays. It's not the question anymore of a "el cheapo" and a "break the bank system".

Peter

kash, RE: integrated CPUs are the future.

I dunno, I've felt this has been going to happen for going on 15 years now, I've been wrong on this every time. Assuming that there is no increase in CPU resources required for future software then you are likely correct. But I have faith in Our Boys From Redmond in their abilities in punching out resource hogging software...

The race to 1GHz last year was successful in having the hardware greatly outstrip the software requirements. The current lull in the market is a result of that race. But historically speaking, present memory and CPU prices will bring on a new wave of software that will demand 1GHz+ processors and bunches of RAM. By the time those integrated processors you are talking about come out, they will have trouble getting on the desktop. Power needs grow almost exponentially. Heck, I have an iPaq running Linux right now, it has 32 meg of RAM, 16 meg of flash, 1 gig hard drive and a processor running at 206MHz. This would have been a killer desktop just a few years ago, now it rides in my pocket. And now that Prism3 is out, but that is a different issue...
