The reason CA is paying more for energy is a combination of factors but almost all of the factors were created or mismanaged by the state (whether it be the government, regulatory, utility, or the NIMBY population). The lack of a quick response by everyone involved continues to make the situation worse and there still seems to be both a lack of response and a failure to implement a long term strategy. What makes the issue even more sad is that most of the nation has had their energy bills double and triple during this period of high commodity prices, yet those of you in CA still want to be protected from higher prices. This protectionist policy is causing your utilities to go bankrupt. It is causing the already high prices to be multiplied by a "risk factor" for anyone supplying energy to your state, creating even higher prices. The problem is, very little of the additional cost is being paid by the majority of the end users. The state is still insisting that costs come down, not that users pay the incrementally higher prices. Drought or no drought, the key is that the state is in a no win situation until they pass on the expense incurred to the end users. Crying to the federal govt won't solve the crisis. Those of us in Illinois have seen our NG bills triple, our electricity costs double and our gasoline prices soar. I have very little sympathy for folks in CA who want to be sheltered from the market place by a state govt who blames everyone, fails to react and continues to lack a plan to correct the situation. A few years ago, when oil+NG prices were dirt cheap, the state had plenty of opportunities to plan for the future. The state failed. Period. Now the state wants the rest of the nation to bail them out, while they refuse to take even the most elementary steps toward solving their problems like raising prices substantially. The rest of the nation has had their price increases forced on them, why shouldn't CA residents be FORCED into the same situation?
