I saw a discussion a few days ago on TV that said that the $90 billion trade deficit with China misstates the reality.

I don't see anything mis-stated... Even if they are US operated companies (generally they are joint-ventures), I don't believe the US is permitted to outright own Chinese companies, unless through a Hong Kong subsidiary.

However, China is permitted to own US companies, and thus, probably own Chinese subsidiaries.

But the bottom line is that China exports $100 Billion worth of goods to the US while only importing $16 Billion from us. And that equates to a large number of Chinese jobs (some 200 million possibly) that are directly dependent upon accesss to US markets.

As far as I'm concerned, I would rather that $80 Billion be "spent" in Latin America developing the productive capacity of our own hemisphere.

There is NO market, other than in the US, that can handle the productive capacity of the Chinese, thus providing even more leverage in our relations with Bejing.

Bear in mind that any issues I have are with the octegenarian communist leaders in Bejing and their attempts to oppose the pace of economic change, while preventing political diversity and the respect for property and individuals rights that are the foundation of true economic and political change.

There are gigantic pools of "cheap labor" in many part of the world, India being a prime example. I see know reason to assist a government that insists on biting the hand that feeds it.
