I was able to corner Irwin Jacobs of QCOM today. They are developing their "BREW" appications layer software, which I found to be quite impressive during his presentation. An electrical engineering student was asking him about physical layer programming, so I took the opportunity to follow up, asking him what trends he saw in the embedded space. He agreed that the insutry would increasingly turn to commercial solutions in order to cope with increased complexity, and he was very negative on any standards body for this process. So to sum up, WIND may have a future in this space, but I got the idea that it is a slow trend that is unlikely to affect WIND any time soon, or warrant the return of the Handset lily pond. -Brian
