Epinephrine: What time last year? if that game was released last year and by that you don't mean just 4 months ago (ie 12/31/00) then considering development time your PC probably exceeds the state of the art at the time of game release.

I don't really know exactly when it came out (but I do know that the 1GHz CPUs were launched in March ;-)). Anyway, that wasn't really the point. These software guys know that CPU and graphics performance increases and should design accordingly.

Yes, I realize that software publishers "have to cater to the installed base", but that shouldn't eliminate the ability to tweak the graphics settings in the game.

When the first Grand Prix game came out quite a few years ago, it simply wasn't possible to run the game at max detail level on any existing desktop computer. Not only did this "tweakability" fuel fans of the game going out and investing in new equipment, it also greatly attributed to the longevity of the game (all imho, of course).

ID Software (Wolfenstein, Doom, Quake) ushered in the era of playable demos, as well as a degree of tweakability not seen before. Many companies have yet to fully grasp these concepts. GP3 was a bit disappointing to me because I felt they took a step backwards in the degree that the graphics could be adjusted. They still have a ways to go in the playable demo department, but at least they've only progressed.
