Why not 80 channels, since that is what DWDM is all about anyway. Otherwise, go in multiples of 16, so you can get to 80 w/o wasting bandwidth. As for the future of a data center being nothing but a giant director ... I don't see it happening, not because it isn't/won't be possible, but because I can't see this being a diversified enough business plan for a VC or business to sign off on. You really need to look at the i-shadow project which will basically be a global SAN, kind of like the internet, but much more sophisticated.
