" The 2000-2001 bear market will look similarly insignificant 25 years from now. Buy and hold may not be the way to maximize your gains, but if it lets you sleep better, maybe that's a fair trade. "

The problem with buy and hold in the information age, is that it doesnt let you sleep better. I give myself 2 year and 5 year time horizons and watch the tape daily. I dont have a solution to this problem.

I agree with your first point. Since, I have a difficult task to obtain those numbers that are used in calculating the intrinsic value of amat, I have to depend on other people telling this value and they among themselves do not agree, and have a vested interest. For me it boils down to market psychology and human emotions are really at play.

As far as time horizon and a good night sleep are concerned. I sleep when I have made some money. If I keep losing money, it does not matter whether it is long term or short term, I do wake up in the morning and turn CNBC on an look at the futures.

I guess my goal to make some money in the market and I am not happy with a 10-20% return.
