Rambus trial gets underway

In what could be the first of several such cases, the trial in Rambus Inc.'s patent infringement lawsuit against Infineon Technologies AG began this week.

Action in the early part of the week saw a jury seated and opening arguments begin in the trial, taking place in Virginia.

Rambus accuses Infineon of infringing on its SDRAM (synchronous dynamic RAM) patents. Legal action was sparked after Infineon refused to pay Rambus licensing fees for the technology. Rambus' patents were previously available in the DRAM patent pool and were freely available until the company decided to start charging licensing fees.

After demanding licensing fees, Toshiba Corp., Mitsubishi Electric Corp., Hitachi Ltd, NEC Corp. and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. all signed deals with Rambus. Three chipmakers -- Infineon, Micron Technology Inc. and Hynix Semiconductor Inc. -- refused and are now facing suits.

The trial is expected to last about four weeks and could bring Rambus a substantial amount of money if the company is victorious.

Rambus can be reached at rambus.com. Infineon can be reached online at infineon.com.
