M'bishi, 4 Others To Tie On Broadband Communications
Monday, April 23, 2001
TOKYO (Nikkei)--A group of five companies will begin video distribution, interactive digital broadcasting and Internet phone services based on broadband communications from next year.

Mitsubishi Corp. (8058), NTT Communications Corp., Dai Nippon Printing Co. (7912), Japan SGI Ltd. and OpenTV Inc. are expected to start discussing specific services after setting up a joint task force on Monday.

The partners plan to offer the services via either cable television or satellite at below 10,000 yen a month. They will also develop a home terminal that allows personal computers to receive digital broadcasts. The terminals are expected to retail for less than 100,000 yen each.

Japan SGI will develop the necessary equipment, in addition to offering servers to distribute video. NTT Communications will provide the communications infrastructure and help find customers using its own OCN Internet access service.

Dai Nippon Printing will collect and manage content, while OpenTV of the U.S. will develop software to cope with the various communications standards.
