re: Verizon coverage. For what it is worth, back in January I bought my wife a Kyocera 2035a from Verizon. I just asked her and she reports that she has never attempted to make a call with this phone that has not gone through, not counting busy signals which are not Verizon's fault. This is considerably better than my experience with my employer-supplied Ericsson on Cingular's TDMA network.

We live near Valley Forge, and we regularly travel in Philadelphia and through Berks, Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery counties. We can also vouch for Orlando, St. Petersburg, and the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. (We might have been out of range when we were forced to detour off I-4 because of the brush fires the end of February.)
