Why give them SOME credit (actually, only a tiny bit)? NTT would not have been the first company to let a flawed product out the door just to be able to say they released on schedule. When a company gets so far down the road that full page ads are already published announcing a release, there is a lot of temptation to tell yourself that the problems aren't that serious, we'll fix them in the next version, what the hell, let it go.

Having said that, I don't know exactly what problems NTT was having. If the phones didn't work at all, that might be a different story but, if that's the case, announcing the release in full page ads is an incredible screw-up. Sounds like the marketing people and the engineering folks don't talk with each other very often.
