Former champ's camp picks a date for rematch with Rahman

April 24, 2001

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- The business manager for former heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis said Tuesday the fighter's co-promoters and HBO have reached an agreement that designates Aug. 18 as a date for a possible rematch with Hasim Rahman.

Lewis lost the WBC and IBF titles last Saturday in South Africa when he was knocked out in the fifth round by a stunning right hand by Rahman.

Adrian Ogun, Lewis' business manager, said HBO, which televised the upset last weekend and has a multifight deal with the boxer, Lion Promotions, based in London, and Main Events, based in New Jersey, came to the agreement on the date. No site was announced.

Rahman, who is promoted by Cedric Kushner, can have another fight before a rematch with Lewis.

Rahman has said he wants to fight Mike Tyson, who will fetch him many millions of dollars more than any other opponent.

``Rahman inherited the WBC mandatory defense, and Mike is the mandatory (challenger),'' said Shelly Finkel, Tyson's adviser. Tyson is ranked No. 1 by the WBC.

There was a rematch clause in the Rahman-Lewis contract, but, Finkel said, ``It's for the fight after the next one.''

Tyson is scheduled to fight David Izon in a 10-round bout June 2 at Washington's MCI Center.
