In March 1999, in response to the University of California's comprehensive evaluation of the health and environmental effects of MTBE and other oxygenates, the Governor issued Executive Order D-5-99, which concluded that "on balance, there is significant risk to the environment from using MTBE in gasoline in California." The Executive Order called for removal of MTBE from gasoline "at the earliest possible date, but not later than December 31, 2002." [Click here to follow the implementation of the Executive Order]
