To: E who wrote (12322 ) 4/25/2001 12:06:11 AM From: The Philosopher Respond to of 82486 E, why are you doing this? So intentionally distorting what I have posted? I mean, I know you're an atheist and MT was a Catholic, but why are you so vituperative about her? Okay. Let's go back to your first post. The Council of Secular Humanism is, of course, an objective and well regarded journalistic enterprise. Ha. But it's still not impossible for them to print the truth if they want to. So, what have they said? Everything said is simply accusations from a disgruntled ex-member. They may be true. But we have enough experiences with people who leave an organization and commit themselves to rabid destructiveness to approach these statements with some caution. And, where is any verification of any of her so-called facts? There are none offered. No direct verifiable quotes from MT, even though she spoke in public repeatedly. Not a single bank statement showing the alleged millions of dollars in bank accounts, which may well have been committed and therefore not available for what you would have liked to spend them on. She charges that she " participated in begging merchants for everyday supplies, even though the order appeared to have ample money to pay a fair market price." Heck, even if this is true, Harvard University begs merchants for discounts or freebies even though they have ample money to pay a fair market price. So does virtually every other charity in America. Our local NPR station begs free office space even though they could afford to pay for space. Of course, then they couldn't afford something else. That's the case with every limited budget organzation, family, government, you name it, in the world. Nothing wrong with that that I can see. Otherwise, it is all unsubstantiated charges with no context at all. The common term, I think, is hatchet job. The other article is filled with "some say" and more unsubstantiated statements. These things may be true. But there's no way of telling from these articles. Legitimate journalists cite sources. And as to why didn't she do more to alleviate other suffering? Well, why doesn't Harvard University use its millions to feed the poor in Boston? Because it's not their mission. Why, for that matter, aren't you, E, over in India right now dispensing birth control if you feel so strongly that the poor there need and deserve birth control? Go. Put your body where your convictions are. Lead by your example. And we can sit back here and take potshots at you. Verified facts, please. So far you have produced zero. None. Nada. I will gladly listen to verified facts presented with adequate context to properly evaluate them. As any responsible journalist does and any responsible reader demands. I'm not interested in rumor, innuendo, unsubstianted charges intended to destroy the reputations of people who don't share your ideology. We had enough of that with Uncle Joe.
