Remember, the dean of the 80's junk bond world was Franco Modigliani, who was a New School grad (something they were both proud and ashamed of.....). Basically, I loved it. Great school with great minds working there. They had a really good microeconomics professor who was the only neo-con teacher that they kind've forced out, which I thought was a little unfair. Also, I had one professor who introduced himself by saying "I am an unrepentant Marxist", which I thought was pretty stupid (though he was brilliant). The writer you refer to was probably Robert Gordon. I took one class with him. Good writer, lousy teacher. I believe the class was Economic History from Feudalism to Capitalism. Wrote a killer paper on the topic. Really awakened me to the fact that Feudalism is dead at a macro level, but alive and well in departmental politics within organizations. The only aspect that is clearly gone is the control of land as a political weapon, but that has been replaced with departmental "turf" and infighting. Currently, I'd say the web is going through its own "enclosure movement" that will benefit it tremendously. (BTW, this is where economists like Hernando de Soto do their best work. The concept of property rights on the web....WOW!) All in all, the New School is great. I learned alot from a different perspective. And I got to take 2 classes with Robert Heilbroner, my hero (great writer, great teacher). I got an A and a B on my papers with him. Which, according to him, means they were of publishable quality (he should know)....and was inspirational to me. I doubt my writing skills will ever be that good again (LOL)...but I had alot of help, too. I was living with a fellow who'd had Heilbroner and gave me great advice on how to structure and write my papers. Even though I attacked the themes from a conservative viewpoint, I was able to beat down Heilbroner's arguments effectively, and he appreciated that. I don't know if he still teaches there, though. He was pretty old 10 years ago....
