Actually RDJR does not take that many more drugs than did many of my moron friends in the 60's. But somehow I remember people were more careful back then about getting caught. Still millions were caught for possession and given criminal narcotic records so RDJR has plenty of company. No matter how sleazoid a person's drug and alcie problem may be cooked up as, one can forgive a hopeless case if they are large in redeeming characteristics. If their act is truly bad then they get the boot. Tom Green or David Spade would get armies of critics sending them needles and any dope they could find if they were hooked. Researchers have proved that some have this gene that likes dope and booze. It is called the Hemingway gene and goes along with being sexaholic and depressive. These types often suicide later in life. Basically it evolved as a drive to satiate as with good tasting foods, so it was a primitive survival mechanism for the proto-organism. Basically the gene wakes our impoverished actor up every day and says "wakie wakie RD, gotta get out there and jam the juice in Bobbie, it's almost nine, your're late again at getting stupid and happy." Bobby seems to have no choice but to obey his genetic bluesprint, as breaking the cycle leaves him with an unfillable hunger and a lingering depressed state. That is why many who finally kick habits have to replace it with a very latched state of spiritual redemption such as born-again this or that. All drug addicts are experts at the ruefully conscientious change of life on the invariably bad come down. I don't know how many times I talked to speed freaks who had built castles to the gods of dreams the night before, who would never touch the stuff again the next morning. Then they stole your record collection, scored and went off on the binge again. The ancient greeks parable of the hash and booze addict was the island of Circe. Sweet singing women beckoned with spectres of pleasure but if you broke and swam to the island you were turned to swine. The only solutions as the greeks could see it was to lash yourself to the mast and steer past the island of doom. Should he be left alone with his habits? Should we tolerate acres of addicts? Are they curable by better psyche techniques? Questions of personal freedom and societal harm conflict here. I reject all thin edge of wedge arguments that no amount of abuse should be tolerated, as trying to get rid of it all just builds criminal empires. But really harmful drugs such as seem to abound today should be excommunicated with vigour. Spearing charioteers of ecstasy labs may be extreme but I personally would not lose a lot of sleep over it. On the other hand it may be a waste of time too. You gotta know you are right beyond a shadow if you sledgehammer a door and blast away with a glock at a room full of deadly narcos. Getting the local Brownie sing song group will not do. Some societies like Switzerland and Holland have completely decriminalized, as chasing every addict is a very expensive proposition and the population of the hooked in a free to poke state does not seem to increase much. I was able to cure alcies very quickly by a combination of non judgemental acceptance (of even the worst swills) and then asking them simple questions that made them see the long running picture of life. Holding a good reflector up to their condition when besotted was necessary when they were rarely sober. Nobody had ever told them how they acted when hammered, so that they could imagine how bad they looked or seemed to others when they were truly disgustingly drunk. Alcies also do not look more than 2 days ahead in life. If they can plan and think in terms of years and hold that course with some form of hope then the lashings to the mast do not seem so binding. You cannot tell a dralcie anything that does not make their failing as "common" to the oberver/helper's eyes. Any judgement that is derisive, including the 12 step technique of turning the back on the backslider is not productive. It reinforces the depression and will to fail. The dralcies are right there to get their the punishment. Dralcies need dispassionate sympathetic help that is real help, not compassion, hate or cold rejection. They cannot handle emotion or they could use that as a substitute for their drug. Basically they need crack the whip herding as if they are being deloused, no prejudice intended (to them). The message sent to them is that "we are with you, just stand in this cold water shower for three more days until it the poison leaves you." They have to see themselves on a course to accept the necessity of restriction. One has to balance the other or they will jump ship. One thing the dralcie has not come to terms with is what the drug is replacing in his life that he is missing. He must see that it is affection, warmth, mummy, love, etc. He must then learn to carry that void with him as a badge of honour and not fill it with expensive substitutes. Heroin is like gold that vapourizes and turns to poison in your life. As a women drugs always wants alimony even when you are married. Getting divorce here is the cheaper solution. If you ask a dralcie just when he is going to quit you should do it as if you ask him when he is going to the store, as if it is a problem that he must do something about but it within his grasp to do and is a matter of making up his mind and time. You quit in a second. It does not take ages. All that withdrawl and depression is of course real but it only last 21 days. No longer. In 3 days the worst is over. It's a lot easier than dealing with the government. And we know that NEVER ends. Come to think of it, that alone is an excellent excuse for using drugs. If the gov't gets in the drug business as in tobacco, oil and booze it could be really bad. It would however short circuit the gangs of criminals to an extent. Few will make cars in competition with GM. It is a system that can be abused as well. Where does the addict get his first fix? The Ministry of Misery and Pleasure? I wonder. Or should we shoot them all, as in China. But still they try. It just gets to be more of a kick. "I Was a Druglord in Red China" would be a million seller. "I Sold Pot in Holland" would be not so exciting. Where did I learn all this about drugs if I never abused them? I learned that to be an empathetic observer of mistakes was much more accurate and useful for judgement than being fooled by them, as contrasted to the person who used drugs and could not see the mistake or the path to the solution. You gotta admit, if someone as hopelessly hooked as RDJR cold give up drugs he has gotta feel good about that! Man it would take the US marines to storm his stronghold of denial and will to failure. Easier to fight off bears with a toothpick. The Fortress of Lies that he lives in makes the Bastille look like a kid's sand castle. The first tool man needs is a cracked mirror. In this he sees all his errors amplified to best avoid the least of them, less they be greater than they show. Next a compass to see a course, a map others have may have drawn so he can guess his way, some rope to restrain himself from danger of supernatural temptations and a telescope to see what comes ahead. All he has to do is chart his course and decide to stay to it. The ship will build itself. EC<:-}
