Petz, Re: Ziff Davis, which was recently purchased by Intel-dominated CNet, will be DROPPING its benchmarks in favor of Sysmark 2001.

Not a big loss IMO. Did you ever use Content Creation Winstone 2001 or Business Winstone 2001? These benchmarks are the worst I know. They take forever to run, you are severely restricted in what you are allowed to do (e.g. you have to use special Windows versions, the taskbar must be in the background etc.) and in the end they heavily depend on hard-disk performance. And I don't think they are very realistic since they always only run one task at a time. Personally I hate to use them (but unfortunately have to). I think it's a much better choice to benchmark real programs.

I never worked with Sysmark, so I don't know if it's any better. However, I noticed that the new 2001 version favors heavily the Pentium 4 over the older 2000 version (where Athlon was by far outperforming the P4). Strange enough Anand and Tom came to very different scores. Look at this blurb from Overclockers.com:

Who Do You Believe? What Do You Believe? I look here (Edit: Tom) and see, for instance, that under SysMark 2001 Internet Content Creation, a 1.7Ghz Willy and a 1.33Ghz Athlon are about even.

I go here (Edit: Anand) and find out the Willy does 25% better in the same test.

Look at the equipment, it looks about the same, certainly nothing to make that much of a difference.

One place just runs these tests under Win98 (why no Win2K scores)? At least they tell you what they run, the other place doesn't even tell you what OS is being used in its tests.

More on this in a little bit.
