But I'm curious to hear what people think about Scale Eight:

Just looks like a well thought out storage farm. I haven't researched the storage farms much. So I can't say how they compare to their competition. They definitely are facing the same barrier as other storage farms: Companies having to trust their information to someone else. That someone else will also have company information from competitors. I ain't no DS, but don't think it is any great threat to ntap.

tb,

Thanks for introducing me to S8. They are comparing (and contrasting) themselves to NAS, SAN and SSPs, but I failed to see the last distinction. From the material they presented they sound exactly like an SSP, albeit with possibly a new wrinkle with their 8FS file system. I wouldn't be surprised either to see SANs and NASs at their 4 StorageCenters if you peaked under the hood.

I'm certainly not arguing against their success. If they can convince companies their data will really be secure, S8 will be appealing for those who don't want to build their own storage system with disaster recovery. The issue that jumped out at me is S8 will manage the data and you don't have to hire all of those expensive Fibre Channel gurus.

Now, for the opinion of someone who is in the business, see Message 15718297
