cj,

This is likely more by design than anything else. As far as I know, AMD uses TMSC to fab their chipsets.

THat's what I meant in my reference to the utilization of the foundries that Kash posted a few days ago.

The 760 chipset south bridge is not particularly optimal, it doesn't have some peripherals like a floppy controller or serial ports (IIRC)

Just about every motherboard being sold now uses Via Southbridge anyway. I am talking about the Northbridge

and AMD only contracted for minimal amounts, I guess they did not want to be in the position of waiting for VIA again.

I am not sure what you mean, but AMD is precisely where they have been stuck for last year and a half - waiting for Via. Now they have a Northbridge that performs better than Ali, is real (rather than KT266 that has been in a limbo for 6 months) and AMD is not manufacturing enough of them. That's crazy. Athlon combined with AMD760 Northbridge is THE best performing CPU in the PC market, Athlon without it is flaky (KT266), has uneven performance (Ali Magic) or somewhat less attractive (KT133A).

Why on Earth would AMD want to make Athlon look worse (and lose Athlon revenue because of that), and purposely forgo revenue associated with sale of the chipset (that's almost equal to selling a Duron processor)?

There are some signs that is changing, though. Apparently they are working on an integrated north/south bridge in Dresden and then there are those LDT chips that they are working on. It will be interesting to see what next year is like.

If the same person is in charge as the person who decided not to make enough AMD760 chipsets, I don't want to know what the next year is like.

Joe

(TSMC&#133 the MC is an acronym for Manufacturing Company).

I'm not sure what's going on in that respect, but there is a new South Bridge chip on the way (part of the AMD-760MP chipset). The 760 chipset uses the 766 South Bridge chip, although most boards listing "AMD760 chipset" actually only use the AMD761 North Bridge.

(AMD doesn't refer to them as North and South Bridges, but System Controller and Peripheral Bus Controller, respectively).
