These will be their final shows at Bill Graham's New Yawk music mecca. Grateful Dead Productions recently released Ladies & Gentlemen...the Grateful Dead, a four-CD set of highlights from these shows. Guests appearing during this run (but not on the CD) included the Beach Boys and Duane Allman. (1971) 56 years ago Stu Cook, bassist with Creedance Clearwater Revival, is born. (1945) 27 years ago Gregg Allman plays the last date of his solo tour. "I want to squelch a few rumors right now," he tells the Cincinnati audience before bringing on the rest of the Allman Brothers Band for an 90 minute encore. (1974) 24 years ago At a concert at the Saginaw, Michigan Civic Center, Elvis Presley makes what will be the last recordings of his life. Three songs from the show will appear, in heavily over-dubbed mixes, on the posthumously released Presley album, "Moody Blue." (1977) 22 years ago The film "Rock & Roll High School" starring the Ramones premiers. (1979) 20 years ago With the departure of signer/guitarist Denny Laine, (former member of the Moody Blues) Paul McCartney's backing band, Wings, breaks up. (1981) 11 years ago The Fender Stratocaster that Jimi Hendrix used to perform the "Star Spangled Banner" at Woodstock is auctioned off in London for a then-record $295,000. (1990) 1 year ago Eric Clapton reunites with former Derek & the Dominos keyboard player Bobby Whitlock for their first performance together in 29 years on the BBC2 TV series "Later With Jools Holland." The two play three songs, including "Bell Bottom Blues." The show airs on April 29. (2000) On Tuesday, April 24, 2001, The New York Daily News reports that Jackie "The Jokeman" Martling has high hopes that he and the management of WXRK, which is owned by Infinity Broadcasting, can work out a financial deal that will allow the comedian to return as head writer and on-air personality for the Howard Stern Show. "My intention is not to break up the Beatles," notes Martling. Though he worked on Stern's show, Martling's contract was with the radio station, which has declined to comment on the matter. Exiled from the Stern program since March, Martling confesses "I miss Howard and Robin and the whole gang, no matter what's said by anyone." Martling will be making a cameo appearance on an upcoming episode of "Son Of The Beach," a Stern produced television series on FX. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Punmaster's MusicWire A Trusted Source In Music News Since 1873punmaster.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------- You Can Quote Me On That...
