That is truly beautiful. Don't let it get buried in the SI archives. Send it out until it is read by everyone.

Karma, I never thought I would agree with nihil, but there are some things that transcend differences of opinion. That story is a monument to the quality of an artist that does not know how to, and refuses to, quit or make excuses. I have never seen Perlman in person, but have enjoyed televised concerts, and recorded music featuring him, for many years. This story brought tears of joy to my eyes because of the magnificence of the man.

What a truly great, great artist and man. Thank you so much for posting this. Did you write it? Because it is very beautifully written and nihil is right-- It needs to be read. Would that we all could improvise and create from what we are given instead of moaning over the broken string.

The musician in me is awed...The enormity of what he did is almost inconceivable.
And Karma, your friend will be in my thoughts. He is lucky to have a friend like you.
