At least you had a choice. My dentist, when I was a child, didn't offer novacaine or any other pain medications. Learning to endure pain was good for children. It's not that novacaine wasn't available then. It's just that she didn't believe in it.

She was very much of the old school. She had an office in an old house in Germantown (Philadelphia) with horsehair sofas in the waiting room. Have you ever sat on a horsehair sofa? They are PRICKLY, especially when it's summer and you're wearing shorts. Fit in perfectly with her personality.

I, too, had soft teeth. I don't know how many cavities I had filled during my childhood, but it was a lot. After my mother died and there was no longer anyone to force me to go to the dentist I didn't go to the dentist for ten years. Finally had to go. And learned that there was such a thing as relatively pain free dentistry. It was a revelation.
