I have been looking for numbers I consider more reliable, coming from scholarly sources with no axe to grind. So far, no luck. That in itself makes the numbers cited implausible. If there had been mass slaughter in the south of France, wouldn't it have been noted?

Here is the other side of the coin, someone with numbers that contradict yours:

HISTORY SHOWS CHRISTIANS TO BE RELATIVELY POOR MASS KILLERS

Christian Carnage:

--16 people hanged for witchcraft in America before 1692.
--19 people hanged for witchcraft during the Salem witch hunt.
--300,000 witches in Europe were executed 1484-1782.
--2000 heretics were executed during two inquisitions.
--Tens of thousands died in seven crusades over 100's of years.

Non-Christian Carnage:

--35,000,000 Chinese killed by Mongols 1210-1219.
--35,000,000 Chinese killed by Mongols 1311-1340.
--40,000,000 Chinese killed by Chang Hsien Chung 1643-1647.
--66,700,000 Russians killed by Communist dictators 1917-1959.
--26,300,000 Chinese killed by Mao Tse Tung 1949-1965.
--2,700,000 Cambodians (1 in 3) killed by Pol Pot 1975-1979.

I'm not trying to minimize the ill-advised witch hunts or antisemitism within the Christian church. I am trying to dispell a common misconception that Christians are historically heartless killers. The numbers just don't support such a notion.
