Jim -- Thank you very much for your thoughts (now, and previously).

As an owner of (what I consider to be) a lot of G* debt, I am sort of stunned that ... with the prospect of G* soon having no debt at all (after a reorganization), the debt (today) is saying the company is worth around 4% of the face amount of the debt (since the bonds are offered at 4 cents on the dollar).

Total debt is (I believe) around $3 billion ($1.5 billion held by the bondholders, and another $1.5 billion held by Loral and Qualcomm).

So, 4% of $3 billion is (only) $120 million.

Huh ?

Didn't ICO's single failed satellite launch cost about $150 million ?

So -- G*'s 52 satellites, and the gateways, and the developed technology , and ... and ... is worth less than 1 satellite ?

Well ... my plan is to hold my bonds until they turn into whatever, and see what happens ...

Jon.

Jim:

Nice post and great re-cap. I think your observations going forward bear attention as I recall your being pretty wired regarding the reorg. Thanks for that, as well.

Would you consider putting your post on the Q* moderated thread? I think your insight is worthy of consideration over there, and would be appreciated.

Thanks again. Guess we can put off the gathering of the 1st 100 club until we have something more tangible to celebrate. Still, I admire this technology and not sure I'd have done much different even had I been more open to other realities. Sometimes you just have to pursue the dream wherever it leads. I too will remain an active observer (as I indicated earlier I moved to G* bonds some time ago) and agree the day will come when the technology is a success.

Regards.

Pierre

Jim

What a thoughtful post, thank you.

>>Vod probably said, “No, we want out.” <<

I am giddy with excitement over the prospect of a Vodaphone free reincarnated Globalstar! Best to leave men like Chris Gent and company to their own devices and free them of such burdens as Globalstar. I only hope the above is exactly what they said.

Your very fine post was posted over to Yahoo's LOR board. Very good read. Good luck. Contribute to the SI LOR board when you have the inclination. I would welcome it.

Dear Jim: Thanks for sharing your very eloquent catharsis. Welcome to the other side of denial! :). I have very much appreciated your dogged research and well reasoned contributions to this thread. I sincerely hope you will continue to post here.

Best Prague regards and much respect,

Jim:

Thanks for your post. Good luck with the Loral. It seems that you've already doubled your money on at least some of your recent Loral purchases.

I agree with your most of your sentiment (I disagree that BLS isn't at fault for much of G*'s and Loral's decline, but that's a debate for another post; basically I think that he needed to realize that G* was toast and do "something" about it). I agree that G* will (or at least can) make oodles of money if properly marketed. Whether that ever occurs (certainly VOD won't do it for "some reason") is unknown.

Has anyone ever determined why VOD basically ignored G*? About a year ago I started posting (but I really wasn't convinced) that VOD had some evil intent on driving G* into the ground as way of eliminating a potential competitor (and preventing other sat telephony systems from coming to market). Was that it? Or was G* simply below VOD's radar, particularly after all of their deals?

Fwiw, imo, most of those who predicted G*'s demise (including Geoff) got it right for the wrong reason (I'd rather be lucky than good). Most stated that G* wouldn't succeed because the market doesn't exist; I don't believe that. Almost no one ever stated that the system wouldn't be marketed and that the SPs wouldn't get behind the system. THAT's why the system failed. Did other things contribute? Sure, but without the marketing and SP support, G* didn't have a chance.

Keep posting and good luck.

Can't blame you for throwing in the towel on GSTRF. I finally did the same thing a week or two ago. I think your current assessment of GLP's fate is very close to what is likely to happen.

I would like to say that although I have not posted often on this board, I have engaged in almost daily lurking on the board for almost three years. I always found your posts to be among the most informative and educational. Many of the posts got little more than a cursory screening from me but yours I would always read from beginning to end. Congratulations on your fine work. Sorry it had to end like this for both of us.

I seem to recall from some earlier posts of yours that you are a fellow Idahoan. Perhaps some day our paths will cross and we can commiserate.

A note for G* subscribers -
If you are a Globalstar sub and either don't use the phone much(ever) or haven't checked into the rate plans lately, I'd suggest giving your provider a call. Of particular interest to those who like having the phone available but rarely use it, you can drop down to a Seasonal Plan for $9.95/month. There is no charge to move to this plan or to move off of it to another plan, which you'll want to do if you plan on using the phone. The phone will still work on the Seasonal Plan, but the charge is $2.99/min.

BTW, I finally used the G* phone earlier this month in Jamaica. I had forgotten how well the thing works.
