Well, since what you posted admits that there is something to my point of view, and tries to find a middle ground between the "Gorbyists" and "Reaganists", I am beholden to you for it.

Without Reagan, Gorbachev would not have come to power or retained power. The Polituburo needed a reformer, both to try to turn around the economy and to launch a "peace offensive". Why did they need Gorby? Because Reagan won a second term.......
