Well, maybe somebody else can clarify. What I understood was that AMD traded the rights to use future x86 sockets (socket stealing) for the use to use the MMX trademark.

At the time of the settlement with DEC et al. I understood that part of the settlement was that AMD would get the rights to Alpha and any extensions that Intel would make to the x86 instruction set.
