They do need a lot of exercise, like any large dog; but your retirement would give you time for that, I guess. They do complicate things in terms of organizing your life, outings, holidays, etc--to some degree around them.

X mentioned a while back that she admired Irish Wolfhounds. Funny, it is the dog I always wanted. But they are the largest in the world and need tons of running space. And their life span is only about 7 years. Unfortunate.
