California is indeed a different place-- one quite polarized between the whole spectrun of liberal and conservatve views on many issues. The US is far from homogeneous. Many say that Gray Davis is the dimmest light in California. Other states laugh at their stupidity which lead to the power crisis and the governor's clumsy interference in the market that lead to PG&E's financial plight. Clearly economics is not his strong suit. On the other hand, CA is among the most democtatic of states in that a certain number of petition signatories can place a proposition on the ballet to be voted up or down by popular vote regardless of what the incumbent power structure desires. Thus, CA is a state given to excess, but also capable or rapid change for the better.
