I expect this will go another way. Small local companies will wire communities just like cable companies once did. They will do it with cheap wireless. Then there will be a big consolidation of these mom and pop companies. Who will do that is not clear to me. MCI Worldcom is making big local inroads in Chicago area. Govt finally leaned on Baby Bell to facilitate this. WCom has tied cheap local and LD rate together in a package that saves me a lot of money. ATT has my cable modem bus. DSL is still not available and no cheaper and slower. My friends are signing on to the cable net service and raving about the speed. It creates a whole new and superior web experience. Where all this will take us? I don't know, but it is playing out differently from the article here.
