The reason 65,000 Americans died over there is because the corrupt, sleazy national leadership (mostly Democratic) could not articulate the real reason why we should be over there, neither sought nor gained national consensus that we should be over there, neither sought nor gained international support for our being over there, neither sought nor gained a strategy for winning the war over there, neither sought nor gained the uncompromised support of South Vietnam, and neither sought nor obtained the right weapons for winning the war over there.
