As I write this post the best performing index in the market is Gold due to the inflationary fear created in today's strong economic data. Number two is the SOX which seems to be trying to rally today despite numerous corporate announcements in the past few weeks of order cancellations and weak demand. Number three is the Biotech Index. How long can technology rally without the worry of inflation causing market analysts' to start the inevitable discussion that the FED may soon be done cutting interest rates.

A bolt of lightning ran through semiconductor stocks Friday, powering beaten-down shares of once red-hot issues, as Linear Technology and Texas Instruments flexed their muscles.

Reflecting the movement in the sector was the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index ($SOX: news, msgs, alerts) , which charged forward by 4.8 percent.

By comparison, the index hit an all-time high of 1,362.10 in March 2000 and slumped to an intraday low of 453.85 early this month.

Looks like to me that the SOX will pull back towards the close erasing some of the gains seen earlier today. The NASDAQ is falling as I write this post.

You're right of course about the Biotech Index it has done well as a defensive group and should not outperform the SOX in an economic recovery. As with any index it appears to be composed of many of the companies perceived to be past leaders in the field. In this case they are Biotechnology companies. I believe that once a biotechnology company actually begins to sell products it can also be seen as a pharmaceutical company by many but these companies are not really major drug companies at all:
