Compaq Named Preferred Technology Provider for Latin Business Association
LOS ANGELES, April 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ - news) today announced a partnership with the Latin Business Association (LBA) that will deliver enterprise infrastructure hardware to the largest Latino business organization in the U.S.

The agreement represents a commitment by Compaq to provide the LBA with computer hardware and technology solutions, including ProLiant servers, desktops and iPAQ Pocket PCs. In exchange, the LBA will recognize Compaq as its preferred technology partner, through joint marketing and promotion campaigns, as well as recognition and exposure at LBA events, including the association's 25th Anniversary Gala Awards Dinner April 27th at the Century Plaza Hotel, and the Latino Business Expo Nov. 15-16, 2001.

``Compaq is a very familiar name in the Latino community and technology has become a centerpiece initiative for the LBA,'' said Ruth Lopez Williams, chairwoman of the board of the LBA, the nation's largest organization representing the concerns of Latino business owners.

``We believe our partnership with Compaq will promote the growth of Latino- owned businesses by bringing technology solutions to our members,'' Lopez said, of the association's burgeoning membership of 30 to 50 new members a month.

The LBA represents the business interests of more than 440,000 Latin businesses in Southern California. With Compaq as the association's preferred technology provider, the LBA will be able to accelerate the fostering of development opportunities, educational workshops and forming advocacy programs. Compaq, with Western regional headquarters in El Segundo, Calif., plans to market its technology hardware, services and solutions on a newly created storefront web page on the LBA web site, providing discounts to LBA members.

``Compaq believes that embracing technology is important to the success of Latino small-business owners in the new digital economy,'' said Gustavo Eichelmann, vice president and general manager for Compaq's Enterprise Business Group.

``Compaq's preferred partnership with the LBA provides a business catalyst by facilitating business start-ups and expansion for the Latino business community,'' Eichelmann said.

Los Angeles is home to 54,000 Latino-owned businesses, an increase of over 211 percent from nine years ago. However, research shows that only six percent of Latino small business owners have an e-commerce strategy, compared with 35 percent non-Latino business owners. Yet, computer sales to Latinos has surged in this technology-driven economy. New research by Redwood Shores- based Cheskin Research shows that of the six largest computer sellers, the most popular brand of computer purchased by Latinos is Compaq.
