Actually, it is not unreasonable to view a scenario 20 years down the road where the Democratic party is home to the (new version of) conservatives, while the Republican party encompasses whatever takes the place of liberalism and its obsolete 20th Century socialism. The parties, over their history, have not been married to a single ideology (otherwise they probably would have disappeared), but the more permanent argument about public power versus private power has found its voice in both at various times. In the wake of liberalism's impending demise, there's a possibility that the public debate could shift to one between authoritarian conservatives and libertarians. Watch the fight over drug prohibition, for example. Today you see liberals and conservatives allied on both sides. There are other issues that don't quite fit the current ideological schism...
