The two directional changes in our lifetimes, and certainly not the last:

Republican Party: The takeover of the party by the rising post-war conservative movement, primarily from the South, which ultimately elected Reagan.

Democratic Party: The takeover of the party by the radical left between 1968 and 1970, which excluded the old line Truman, Kennedy types, which I like to refer to as the "patriotic" liberals. The fortunes of the so-called New Democrat movement, which was a reaction to the Reagan landslides, remains to be seen, but they ain't had much luck within the party for the last few years.
