One of the little told tales of the election is a precipitous decline in the response rate. Well over half of those reached by phone (the only practical way of doing a national poll) used to agree to answer, even in the 96 election. Now, about a third do. This lowers confidence in how representative those who respond are. There is also reason to think that some people are deliberately giving false answers, out of the sort of hostility you mention.

You are right, reputations have a tendency to rise and fall in the business, as there is an element of luck in their successes. Careful crafting of questions, frequent polling, and large samples all help, but everyone weights and interprets somewhat, and if you make the wrong assumptions, you can suffer.......
