No matter how it gets to the end user, the signal will be optical to at least the last mile. That kind of distribution requires switches. ..just like a railroad needs switches to get that boxcar to the factory door.

The problem is with Corvis, IMO.

He thinks that a lot of people have got totally the wrong idea about the way the core
of telecom networks will evolve. He sees everything becoming a lot more distributed so that there's
no need for very high channel-count DWDM systems and monster optical switches


The management at Akamai seems to be counting on this.
