Yep that's what happens when people can't afford to have cars.

Have lived, a total of, 14 years in four countries outside of the U.S. married to two foreign women, the first died. Yes. I know you are married to a Russian. But I can't claim to be an expert on how foreigners think, both wives have let me know I don't even know what they think. There are things that are superior, IMO, in each of the countries in which I have lived, to what we have in the U.S. But on an overall basis I really doubt any place beats the U.S., unless you are super rich. Be wonderful if one could combine the best of each country but probably not possible.

It is also possible to delude oneself into thinking that something is wonderful, when one is living elsewhere on a non permanent basis. Knowing that one will be leaving in two or five years makes one ignore certain things, and put a brighter tone on others.
