The fact that it was Democratic was an anachronism. I once met James Meredith, the man who integrated Ole Miss, at a conservative function in DC. He was working for Jesse Helms. As he said, "different times, different problems". See, a lot of fellows who were moderate or progressive on race were conservative on other things. It was not all race that caused alienation from the Democrats, a lot of it was the anti- war Movement and the nomination of McGovern......

The last true bastion of white racism in America today is the liberal movement. It takes a lot of contempt for someone to constantly try to convince them that they cannot succeed without the help of the rigged game that only liberals can give them.
