Religion is one mechanism for people to "be different" but it is hardly the only one. There is often a tendency to divide people between "us" and "them", and too frequently the standards that would restrict what you can do against "one of us" don't apply to them. Some one could be one of "them" because of skin color, religion, ideology or philosophy, ethnic background, place of birth, nationality or whatever.
