The size of the short interest also blew me away, especially considering that most of the long shares are held by institutions and there shares are normally not available for lending to shorts, at least retail shorts.

I agree that some professional big time shorts are betting heavy. Doesn't meant they are right, but I don't think they would place such a large bet unless they are convinced that they have all aces.

I was wondering, and don't really understand, how much of the short interest is due to shares just becoming optionable. I would think very little, as they just became optionable.

I no longer have a "dog in this hunt", but to add to the Barron's issue, IMO they do a good job "normally" on companies in which they write negative story. In the case of PLMD, it appears they did their homework and just one other example is PPRO. They did a number on them a couple weeks back when the stock was trading well above $20.00...and a check on the share price today indicates they were correct again.
