Overview:

The UMTS Forum, the international 3G development organisation has published a report which forecasts that revenues from 3G services worldwide will represent a cumulative market opportunity worth as much as US$1 trillion between now and 2010.

Among other findings the report include:

* Total operator-retained annual revenues of over US$300 billion for 3G services by 2010

* In 2010 the average 3G subscriber will spend about US$30 per month on data services

* Non-voice service revenues will dominate voice revenues by 2004 and comprise 66% of 3G service revenues by 2010

* Asia Pacific represents the single largest total revenue opportunity - reaching US$120 billion in 2010

* Europe and North America will provide the highest annual revenue per POP (US$150 - US$200 per year).

In a conservative prediction of the potential global uptake of 3G mobile multimedia services over the next decade, the report confirms growing industry recognition that significant licensing and roll-out costs for 3G networks over the next few years will be rewarded in the long term by fast-growing revenue streams from consumer and business users alike.

This report follows on from other outputs which have dealt with: a regulatory framework and spectrum aspects for UMTS (Report #1), technical aspects (#2), impact of licence cost levels (#3), licensing conditions (#4), minimum spectrum requirements (#5), UMTS/IMT-2000 spectrum (#6), extensions to core band spectrum (#7), and the future market for mobile multimedia services, as well as mobile voice and data services (#8) and UMTS Report No. 9. These reports can be found on the UMTS Forum Web site, www.umts-forum. org/reports.html.
