I tried everything you folks suggested and nothing worked but believe me I appreciated everyone's effort in trying to help. As I posted previously, giving the monitors the same refresh rate and/or changing primary monitors worked. But, there were other issues that made me return the system to win98, where this problem reappeared. The C drive was reformatted in between. Didn't take long going through the 15 steps to find Chinese letters in the msconfig system.ini It starts out with 5 unchecked boxes with gobble de gook beside them. Guess my question is now how do I proceed? I have reinstalled win98 a few times this week. Norton or a program in Win98, sorry don't remember as I saw the sun come up a few times this week trying to deal with this, did find a corrupt file and have me put in the win98 cd to repair it. Really thought that was it but no such luck. The black boxes for icons were fixed by my son who stopped in to look at the system but I wasn't home and have no clue what he did. Oh, he just called and said it was corrupt and at this point he would not only reformat C: but also do an F Disk which doesn't make me too happy. The drive is 32Fat and I left the programs on D: for both Win2K and Win98. Hmmm, is this my problem? Oh well, guess I am asking now is this the only way to fix the mess I have gotten myself into? Can add one more thing, when I removed the video card in device manager to take system back to just one card to get running, the machine locked up. Sorry to be so long winded here - must still be tired from seeing the sun come up this morning. TIA Judy PS the 15 steps are printed and in my notebook along with other great info from this thread. :-)
