kap,

re: MOT and IBM difference

With MOT is was a blind dumb partner leading AMD.

With IBM AMD has someone who is already in production.

Even tho SOI is late at least it now a realistic schedule.

MOT has been terrible at moving product from lab intro production. Just look at anemic MHZ rating of Power PC families.

Its good that AMD is partnering with IBM.

Having said that they are still perhaps a day late and dollar shiort with hammer now.

I just don't see AThlon/palomino holding up to PIV in early 2002.

regards,

Kash

What are the differences between Moto's and IBM's SOI 130nm process? From what I remember there aren't many. Maybe, the IBM agreement was to help with device physics, capacity or fabrication.

Probably the biggest difference is that the IBM .18um SOI process is all ready qualified for manufacturing with the .13um process probably to follow by summer's end. This means that the process meets all IBM reliability criteria. Who knows what the state of the Moto process is? Beyond that, there could obviously be performance differences based on different transistor design and layout ground rules. From my experience, any such performance differences would favor IBM's process. I would also suspect the state of IBM's SOI device and circuit models to be more advanced relative to Moto. In my opinion, IBM did a great job in this area.
