My impression was that the majority turned against the war several years before it ended, and that it took awhile for the pols to realize it and to figure out how to get out "gracefully".

Yes. At best (or worst), they can continue until the next elections when we throw the bums out. Wanting to keep their positions, they mostly switch before that.

Polls today (recognizing my distrust of polls) are showing, for example, that Bush is basically in tune with the majority of the people. I'm sure you disagree, but there it is.
