when that happens usually only a reboot will bring your speaker icon back. mine used to disappear quite intermittently in win98se, and i spent considerable time on this thread soliciting opinions for getting the darn thing to stay put. i was going to say that ultimately the problem cleared up, but then i realized that in fact i quit using win98se so much. the disappearing speaker icon phenom doesn't occur for me in win2000.

reboot was what always worked for me.... that is after checking for what tc recommended.
