hi e

it's funny how often rebooting will correct what is wrong. just like trying a second time to open a web page that has refused to fill for whatever reason. often, a second attempt will work, especially if you know it's a page that has been performing okay up until that point.

sometimes a page on si is just spinning and spinning, treading water, refusing to load. i hit the browser window stop button after what i feel is a reasonable amount of time, and resubmit (or re-click whatever action i was taking). inevitably it goes right thru like nothing was ever the matter.

the reason i mention this is not only for the obvious benefits for issues like your bashful speaker icon, but this 'rule of repetition' sometimes works in more complex troubleshooting. i've found that sometimes it pays off to try the exact same recommended solution more than once.

another way of looking at this would be to consider the many people who post here and dutifully provide us a list of all the things they have tried so far, all unsuccessfully. many is the time i have felt like saying, "well, try them all again". <g3> so many variables enter into the mix and alter the precise sequence of events (and thus, the outcome) that it is almost mandatory that a given step, or even series of steps, be tried more than once.

to use a crude analogy... think of closing your car door, but you've not used enough force, and an interior warning light comes on advising you that a door is ajar. what is the best thing to do at this moment? reach for the owner's manual in the glove box and see if there is anything listed under 'door will not close'? call your mechanic? go to the gym and lift weights? (and at each of the above places, dutifully report that "it couldn't be closing the door the normal way, i've already tried that and it didn't work!") of course not. the natural thing to do is to reopen the car door a bit and try closing it again.

anyway, i know i just rambled a bit, and i thank you for providing me the opportunity to get all those facts out. they must have been kicking around inside for quite awhile. but the very simple fact remains that many pc probs get fixed either by rebooting or retrying whatever it was that seemingly failed the first time.

:)
