IBM DB2 Scores On Benchmark Results

SOMERS, NY -- (INTERNET WIRE) -- 27-04-2001 -- IBM (NYSE: IBM) announced today that DB2 Universal Database again demonstrated its technology leadership with another suite of industry leading benchmark results. IBM's DB2 set record-breaking benchmark results with vendors SAP and PeopleSoft, clearly establishing DB2 as a performance leader for running enterprise applications, beating competitors such as Oracle.

SAP and PeopleSoft have leveraged the performance advantages of DB2 to present the marketplace with faster and more reliable solutions. The increases in system performance result in faster transaction and batch loads allowing companies to work faster and more efficiently to manage information - saving both time and money.

On March 23, 2001, DB2 running on the IBM eServer xSeries scored big with two new leading SAP Sales and Distribution benchmark results. First, DB2 v 7.1 and the new xSeries 370 server combination produced a new record benchmark result for Intel servers on the 2-tier SAP R/3 4.6 Sales & Distribution benchmark. DB2 now holds the top two results in this class: 375 SD users, and 312 SD users.

Also, DB2 v7.1 running on the xSeries eServer published a new record benchmark result for 4-way Intel servers on the 2-tier SAP R/3 4.6 Sales & Distribution benchmark: 250 SD users. It was found that DB2 required less resource and gave better response time, when DB2 supported SAP R/3 SD users, as compared with Oracle's results.

Also in March, benchmark results were announced showing that PeopleSoft had certified a new world record performance benchmark for its new pure internet enterprise application PeopleSoft 8, General Ledger, a solution powered by DB2. The benchmark measured runtimes for one standard database model representing an extra-large organization. PeopleSoft 8, General Ledger recorded 5,000,000 lines for the Edit and Post process in 45.48 minutes and established a new record of 6,595,823 million journal lines per hour. Using DB2 on AIX and RS/6000 S80 servers, PeopleSoft recorded its strongest results to date for this application.

By delivering exceptional benchmark results, such as this one with DB2, PeopleSoft demonstrates the value of e-business applications powered by DB2. Today's performance results also reaffirm both SAP's and PeopleSoft's choice to standardize on IBM's DB2 database, over Oracle, as their preferred development platform.

In addition to these benchmarks, IBM's DB2 data management software still holds the top slots with the following benchmarks:

* On March 19, 2001, i2 announced a new benchmark/performance record for i2's TradeMatrix Internet Fulfillment Suite. This framework combines the i2 TradeMatrix Internet Fulfillment Suite (IFS)(TM) running on the IBM eServer pSeries 680 using IBM DB2 v7.1, creating powerful and scalable platforms for high-volume transactions. This benchmark establishes a new precedent in transaction volumes with real-time order promising for e-business e.g., enterprise portals, B2B marketplaces, e-tailers etc.
* As of January 31, 2001, Dell announced a benchmark of DB2 UDB Version 7.1, running on Red Hat Linux, SAP R/3 SD, on a Dell Poweredge 8450, with 312 SD users, 8-processors SMP.

* On October 23, 2000, PeopleSoft certified the record-setting Payroll V8 online benchmark result of 162,000 employee views/hour with IBM's DB2 UDB V6.1 for Sun Solaris.

* On October 13, 2000, SAP certified two new R/3 Two-Tier Assemble-to-Order benchmark results: a record 8,570 Assembly Orders/hour with IBM's pSeries 680 server and DB2 UDB V7.1 for AIX, and 6,300 Assembly Orders/hour with IBM's RS/6000 S80 server and DB2 UDB V7.1 for AIX.

* On September 15, 2000, Baan certified the record-setting BaanERP Hostmode benchmark result of 11,886 Baan reference users with IBM's pSeries 680 server and DB2 UDB V7.1 for AIX.

<Kal Kan, however, just needs to talk some trash because the "simple x86-64 Hamster" has now slipped a year beyond the original estimated ship date - and the AMDroids are feeling poorly.

Of course, the MuSkanks was canceled and the PaloMeatHead still isn't shipping and the 760MP SMP servers are still non-existent !>

What is really funny is that all this is true, but it does not matter. Intel will never fully recover from the blunder of designing P4 to be twice as large as it's predecessor, and not getting any additional performance in return.

P4 insures prosperity for AMD for many years into the future.
