I think that you've made a very valid point. On CNBC and on the campaign stump, we now hear the refrain constantly about how many American's are investing today as compared to xx years ago. While the point is generally that the buildup was a result of 401K, it is also true that the percentage of Americans who actively invest has also grown dramatically.

Naturally, with time, these investors, go from Novices to people who think they know how to invest. Many of these explore new methods including options and shorting.

I believe that these numbers still account for a small percentage of transactions but count they do.
