Actually in communications LIGHT is almost always 1310nm or 1500 to 1600nm for DWDM over single mode fiber. 800nm to 900nm across multi-mode fiber.

No, it isn't. Simple as that.

And it wasn't a press release, but rather some Reuters' reporter (http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/nm/20010423/tc/numerical_intel_dc_2.html)

As Milo also states, "light" has massively varying meanings in different contexts. This is exactly what makes "the wavelength of light" complete nonsense. You simply need to include at least one more word ("the"), but preferably the source of the light as well.
