Apr 29 - Only Intel ads this week, and not many of those
b=Best Buy c=Circuit City u=CompUSA bto=Build to Order
Note that some details (flat screen monitor, amount of memory, better printer, etc)
means the relative value of these systems is not completely reflected below. This
list reflects other rebates, but not the $400 dollar one from AOL/Compuserve.
bto means I added $150 to bto prices to reflect a shipping/inconvenience estimate.
MSN means I subtracted $100 to reflect value of 1 year of Internet

Brand Chip speed Monitor Disk Plus Printer Price
eMachines Celeron 667 17 15 RW Yes $399b MSN
HP Celeron 766 15 20 RW Yes $549b MSN
Compaq Celeron 766 15 20 Yes $749c
Compaq Celeron 800 15 40 RW Yes $799b MSN
Compaq Celeron 800 15 40 RW Yes $949c
HP PIII 866 17 40 RW Yes $1,099b MSN
HP PIII 1000 17 40 DVD RW Yes $1,199b MSN

HP P4 1300 None 60 DVD RW No $1,649c
Compaq P4 1700 17 60 DVD RW Yes $2,279b bto MSN

An interesting ad this week showing custom shop prices was on page 14 of the business
section of the Chicago Tribune where Century Computers (847-891-1760) offered the
following prices and configurations. Given recent CPU pricing on pricewatch, these prices
give a general indication of the relative cost advantages held by the various platforms.
Brand Chip speed Monitor Disk Plus Printer Price
Clone P3 1000 None 20 CD ROM No $539
Clone Athlon 1300 None 20 CD ROM No $549
Clone P4 1300 None 20 CD ROM No $779
Clone P4 1400 None 20 CD ROM No $829

RE: <I was simply trying to point out that a notebook running PowerNow! isn't limited to a lower operating frequency when running off the battery (compared to when running off the mains). (This in contrast to SpeedStep, where such a limitation is in place).>

Let me clarify your SpeedStep statement, which I think I misinterpreted at first. My PIII notebook with SpeedStep can run at full speed on batteries if I choose to run it that way. However, you are correct in that when SpeedStep is enabled and running in battery-saving-mode (or whatever it's called), then the processor is slowed down while on batteries.
